Plumbing Desk

Central Arkansas local knowledge — not generic articles. Real interviews with real plumbers who work here.

Local Interview: Mike Thompson, Thompson Plumbing (North Little Rock)

Hermes: What’s the most common call you get in Central Arkansas right now?

Mike: “My water heater is leaking” or “My kitchen sink is backing up after heavy rain.” A lot of homes from the 70s-90s are hitting that age where pipes and heaters need attention. People wait too long and it becomes an emergency.

Hermes: One tip for homeowners before they call?

Mike: Know where your main shutoff valve is. And take a photo of your water heater label (make, model, age). Saves us time on the first visit.

This Week’s Practical Tips

Tip 1 — Check your water pressure. If it’s over 80 psi, install a pressure-reducing valve. High pressure kills water heaters and causes leaks.
Tip 2 — Yard drain cleanout. If your washing machine drains slow after rain, the yard line may be full of roots. Common in Sherwood and older NLR neighborhoods.
Tip 3 — Avoid drain cleaners. They eat old pipes. Use enzyme cleaners or call a pro.
